Restoration of the Hill Church Organ
Installed in St Margaret's Church in the first year of Queen Victoria's reign, the Hill Church Organ has for over 170 years been played regularly to meet the needs of worship, local weddings, baptisms, funerals and festivals. Enlarged in 1890 and last overhauled 50 years ago, the organ is now undergoing complete restoration. Recognised as a particularly fine instrument, the PCC commissioned specialist organ restorers Martin K Cross to commence work soon after Easter 2009. The organ has been completely dismantled and its component parts transfered to the workshop for treatment.
Remarkably there are 680 pipes in the organ, of wood and metal, varying in length from over 2 metres to less than that of a small pencil. The Friends of St Margaret's Church, Horsmonden (FoSCH) have agreed to help underwrite the costs of the works. It is hoped that contributions towards the full cost of just over £25,000 will be met through fundraising efforts. A Flower Festival was held on 5-7 June 2009 and an evening of music and a picnic on the 26 June in the gardens at Finchcocks, famed for their commitment to the care of historical muscial instruments.
Applications for funding are also being made to appropriate grant making bodies. If you are interested in making a gift towards the works then you will be helping to ensure that this exceptional musical instrument retains its qualities for many years to come. Please contact the Churchwardens for further information or pick up a gift aid form in the church.
